WHAT CAUSES RISING DAMP?

Rising damp occurs when moisture from the ground travels upwards through walls due to a failure in the building’s damp protection. In Hereford and surrounding areas, rising damp is particularly common in older properties where damp proof courses are missing, damaged or no longer effective. Understanding the cause is essential to applying the correct treatment and preventing recurring issues.

COMMON CAUSES OF RISING DAMP IN HEREFORD HOMES

There are several factors that commonly contribute to rising damp.

Failed or Missing Damp Proof Course (DPC)

The most common cause of rising damp is a damaged, deteriorated or completely absent damp proof course. Older homes often pre-date modern damp protection, allowing ground moisture to rise freely through masonry.

Bridged Damp Proof Course

Rising damp can occur when external ground levels, paths, flower beds or internal plaster bridge the damp proof course. This allows moisture to bypass the barrier and travel into walls above the DPC.

Porous Masonry and Mortar

Brickwork and mortar naturally absorb moisture over time. When combined with a failed DPC, porous materials allow water to rise higher within walls, worsening damp problems.

Poor Drainage Around the Property

Blocked drains, inadequate drainage or water pooling near external walls can increase ground moisture levels, making rising damp more likely.

Internal Floor Levels Above the DPC

In some homes, internal floors or screeds have been installed above the level of the damp proof course, allowing moisture to bypass the barrier and affect internal walls.
